RESUMO

Three series of secondary ammonium chloride from turpentine were synthesized and evaluated as botanical herbicides. The preemergence herbicidal activities against ryegrass (Loliun multiflorum) and barnyard grass (Echinochloa crus-galli) were investigated using water as the only solvent. Their toxicity was evaluated by cytotoxicity assays. Preliminary results demonstrated that the herbicidal performance of the prepared salts was similar or much higher than that of corresponding secondary amines and even commercial herbicide glyphosate. Promisingly, compound 14e containing a cyclohexyl-substituted p-menthene skeleton with an IC50 value of 0.0014 mM against root growth of ryegrass showed 39-fold higher herbicidal activity than glyphosate. Besides, this compound was found to be nontoxic to human and animal cells, indicating the potential application as a water-soluble herbicide for ryegrass control.

The poor mechanical properties and disadvantages of catalysts limit the application of self-healing materials. To address these issues, catalyst-free self-healing bio-based polymers (AESO-EMPA polymers) with robust mechanical properties were prepared using epoxidized maleopimaric anhydride (EMPA) and aminated epoxidized soybean oil (AESO). The AESO-EMPA polymers are recyclable and exhibit self-healing and shape memory because of the dual-dynamic network of multiple H-bonds and dynamic ester bonds in the structure. Under the synergistic catalysis of the tertiary amines and hydroxyl groups originated from the polymers, the polymers in this study achieve network rearrangement without the need for additional catalysts. The polymers also exhibit excellent mechanical properties with a tensile strength of 29.1 ± 0.25 MPa and a Tg of 80.2 °C owing to the unique rigid backbone of rosin and the dual-dynamic network. The AESO-EMPA polymers can be used as reusable adhesives and exhibit excellent shear strength and repair rates.

In this study, we will report on the synthesis and application of efficient botanical agrochemicals from turpentine for sustainable crop protection. Two series of turpentine derived secondary amines were synthesized and identified by FT-IR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, and HRMS. The herbicidal activities against Echinochloa crus-galli were evaluated. The potential toxicity of the synthesized compounds was tested by MTT cytotoxicity analysis. The effect of structure of the synthesized secondary amines and corresponding Schiff base compounds on their activities was investigated by quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) study. All target products were found to be low toxicity, with similar or higher herbicidal activities than commercial herbicides diuron and Glyphosate. Results of QSAR study showed that a best four-descriptor QSAR model with R2 of 0.880 and Rloo2 of 0.818 was obtained. The four descriptors most relevant to the herbicidal activities are the min valency of a N atom, the max total interaction for a C-H bond, the relative number of aromatic bonds, and the min partial charge (Qmin).

To estimate the bioleaching performance of chalcopyrite for various hydraulic residence times (HRTs), laboratory-scale bioleaching of chalcopyrite concentrate was carried out in a continuous bubble column reactor with three different HRTs of 120, 80 and 40 h, respectively. An extraction rate and ratio of 0.578 g Cu l(-1) h(-1) and 39.7%, respectively, were achieved for an HRT of 80 h at a solids concentration of 10% (w/v). Lower bioleaching performances than this were obtained for a longer HRT of 120 h and a shorter HRT of 40 h. In addition, there was obvious competition between Leptospirillum ferriphilum and Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans to oxidize ferrous iron, causing large compositional differences between the microbial communities obtained for the different HRTs. Leptospirillum ferriphilum and Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans were found to be the dominant microbes for the longer HRT (120 h). Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans became the dominant species when the HRT was decreased. The proportion of Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans was comparatively constant in the microbial community throughout the three process stages.

Two sphalerite samples with different iron/sulphur (Fe/S) ratios, Shuikousan ore (Fe/S 0.2) and Dachang ore (Fe/S 0.52), were processed using three microbial species, Leptospirillum ferriphilum, Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans and Acidithiobacillus caldus. Following 20 days of bioleaching in shake flask cultures, a higher zinc (Zn) extraction (96%) was achieved with Shuikousan ore than with Dachange ore (72%). The extraction efficiency increased when elemental S was added to Dachang ore to attain the same Fe/S ratio as that for Shuikousan ore. Following the addition of S, the redox potential, pH and total dissolved Fe for Dachang ore demonstrated similar behaviors to those of Shuikousan ore. Acidithiobacillus caldus and L. ferriphilum became the dominant species during the bioleaching of sphalerite with a high Fe/S ratio. In contrast, the dominant species were A. ferrooxidans and A. caldus during the bioleaching of sphalerite with a low Fe/S ratio. These results show that the Fe/S ratio has a significant influence on the bioleaching behavior of sphalerite and the composition of the microbial community.
